Help ID'ing this hone please!
My mom gave me this hone yesterday. It is 7in long, 1in high, and 2.5in wide. It belonged to her uncle when she was a little girl and all the men of the house used str8's. The only marks on the stone are E.C. As you can see, this stone has really been worn. Does it look salvageable? valuable? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Still Stone Crazy After All :-(
I can't say what it is. Are the initials E.C. relevant to anyone in the family ? One way or the other you can try it and see how it works for you to get an idea of what you have.

Thanks Jimmy! Unfortunately
, these are not initials for any of the family. I'll likely set it aside as a future project. The dents and dings in this thing are quite deep so I won't use it on any of my straights. I do have a knife that I may experiment with though.

E.C. Simmons marketed barber hones as well as razors, but your stone doesn't look like a barber hone.

Blood & MWF soap make great lather
What does the grit of the stone feel like? It looks like a natural stone rather than a manufactured hone. Could E.C. be Escher Co.? I've never seen one stamped like that, so this is just a guess, but you should be able to feel the surface of the stone and say whether it feels like an Escher.

I am sorry to say. As far as i have seen stones (barber hones) etc this stone doesn't look like finishing stone . what i mean by that you may use on straight razor to set the bevel etc but not the final finish process. hope this helps.

I am not very well aquainted with hones. However, I do own a Thurry and its consistency is about the same. It's very smooth...except where it's pitted.
