    Default Escher and Thuringian Hones

    Read this somewhere.....QUOTE

"The Original Escher Stone, as well as the new Thuringian hone, are known by straight edge razor shavers as the ultimate razor honing stone. It is used as the final hone after shaping and sharpening the blade with man-made or natural abrasives that produce a wire-edge, or burr, in the fashion of a saw-toothed like serrated line."

What is a wire edge?/A burr?/ Is this a good thing? I don't want a saw tooth serrated blade.. Do I?

    Anyone care to comment???

Not quite sure how to phrase it, but wire edges are produced usually when drawing a blade over the stone in a stropping motion, with the spine leading. They are often deliberately produced when sharpening knives, then removed.

Razors are a different game, & they are not a good thing. You'll get one if you overhone & the resulting shave will be far from comfortable!

In fact you don't want to have wire edge you like to have saw tooth edge.
Now saw tooth has been used for decades. that is why some say x pattern helps to great angle for saw tooth which will cut better .
that tooth is so small i cannot see it under 100x magnification after final finish. hope this helps.

A wire edge is a small bur that runs the length of the blade. It is where the metal on the edge has rolled over slightly. This is not a good thing on a razor.

When I first found it I just added it. When I went to preview I noticed the text so I went back and cropped it. Oh well I think the point got across right.

Sounds like you took that off a sales site, based on the language. Never believe anything you read in a sales site.

If you want to do some interesting reading of archived threads do a search for 'burr'. There have been some spirited discussions on whether there is such an animal pertaining to razors and some interesting asides on honing in general within some of those threads.
