    Default What do you mean Chinese 12k stone?

    I've been looking at buying a set of hones and have more or less decided on 2 Norton combination stones; the 220/1000 and 4000/8000. But That chews up most of my budget and I'd like a finishing stone rather than a pasted strop.

    Lots of people on SRP talk about a Chinese 12k stone. I'm from New Zealand and they certainly aren't available here that I can find. So where do you get them from? Is this the same sort of thing;

    12000 grit natural whetstone for fine honing. +/- 2 lbs - eBay (item 220719842945 end time Feb-03-11 16:37:32 PST)

    That one looks EXTREMELY rough and also much lighter (could just be the photo) than normal, but it is the hones from Guangxi that we are talking about. I think the ebay seller open_razor or something like that sells them also, and his look much more finished (flat looking faces).

    Don't forget to get something to lap your hones with.

    EDIT: Yup, it's Open_razor. See here: http://stores.ebay.com/classic-razor...=p4634.c0.m322

    royalshave also carries them.

    I've wanted to try out these hones but I'm scared of lapping them.

    Carba-tec used to sell them a few years back but can't see them on the website now. They have a branch in Auckland. Worth a phone call. The 8x2" used to be only $15. Oh, & they call them Chinese polishing stones not C12k's

    Thanks heaps for the tip on carba-tec. It turns out that the only store in NZ is 5 minutes out of my way coming home from work (by foot!) I stopped by today and bought a 8"x3"x1" C12k for NZ$35. They also had the smaller one you bought for NZ$25. That has saved me enough dosh that I should be able to buy a lapping stone as well!
