Thread: DMT 220 or 325 for lapping?

Hello all,


I have a Naniwa set (2k, 5k, 8k, 12k), a Chinese 12k, and a Swaty 2-line barber hone.

I want to buy a lapping stone.
I have the choice between:
- 3" x 08" DiaSharp® Stone, 220x for $52.00
- 4" x 10" DiaSharp® Stone, 325x for $89.00

Which one should I get in order to lap them? Why?

The 325 is what is generally used for lapping. Also I am sure you can find the 325 in the 8" model for much cheaper than $90.

In the US you can, but it's a bit more challenging in Canada. I bit the bullet and got the 10" 325 from Lee Valley and it works great for lapping.

I don't know how much shipping to Canada is, but Straight Razor Designs has the 8" DMT 325 for $47.

With shipping you're up to about $75, then you have the wonderful possibility of being dinged by Canada Customs, though they usually only hit you on orders over $100. Shipping to and from Canada is a pricey proposition

I guess it would be best to get the 10" then.

I'd also recommend the 325. I also have an XX (120) that I use to lap stones that are really way out of flat. I start that that and finish with the 325. I haven't used the 220 and it might leave your stone smooth enough but I know the 325 will deliver the goods.

I would get the 4 x 10 325. That extra inch wide and 2 inch longer length will be very useful on a 3 x 8 hone.

Go for the 325. The bigger size would be handy, and the XC is a bit too coarse, and even after a break in period, leaves scratches in naniwas, and natural stones.
