Thread: Birthday Gift... Advice?

Hey everyone, just got this as a birthday gift from my father.

It seems great and definitely high quality, and I like that about it, as well as the thoughtfulness of my father to get me a gift I can truly use. Now I am here to ask you all the question, how often can/should I use the hone side of it. It is definitely very fine, and I believe that it is for touch ups in between honings.

Also, do I just follow the instructions on here for honing, or does this type of dry touch up hone require special instructions?

I have not tried this brand of paddle strop although it does look quite nice, were there no instructions with it?

My best guess is the hone may be similar to a barbers hone, use it when the blade does not shave like it should such as pulling and tugging at the whiskers instead of being smooth.

It says it's a slate and it is produced in Germany. Perhaps it is a 'new' Thuringian similar to the Mueller ones? I would guess if you were only using one razor, that it would need to be used once a month, 30 laps or so.

The only paperwork that came with it was in German and I believe it was a warranty, it did not look like instructions to me. I'll let you guys know if I find out anything else about it.

thats a great hone and paddle set up i have to of them and their from germany the only difference is mine has surgical black ark as the honing stone my question to you is what other honing stones do you have and is your razor shaving sharp ?

Yes, my razor is shaving sharp. My father bought it for me with the intention to touch up my blade between honings, as I have a very coarse beard. I have no other hones, as I have only been wet shaving for a little while, I'm waiting a bit longer before I start honing, but I felt this would be an ok start. Thoughts?

So they are surgical black Arks, not Thuringians?

yes you can use that hone as a touch up hone its probably around 8-10k
