Thread: is this a coticule?

Picked this up at an antique store today. Rubbing it with a DMT 325 instantly brings up a rich milky slurry. Surface is very smooth. Used it as polishing stage after a pyramid progression with a Norton 4/8. I'm new to this, and have never actually seen a coticule in person, so would appreciate opinions. Thanks in advance.

Yes -- and it looks like a nice one.

Lap it (with sand paper) to near flat and
use it like a barber hone once a week and
you will get a lot of good shaves.

I agree its a yellow coticule glued to a shist grit ratting about 4000 with slurry and 8000 with just water. and worth about 125 dollars

You should be very happy using this coticule after a 8k hone. I would suggest you watch for automatic slurry generation when you are using it with water.
If this stone does so (not all do), you will notice that the water becomes cloudy with regular x-strokes. Just rinse the hone and razor every 10 or 20 laps (depending on how much slurry you think is appearing). This will help maintain the progress to an ever keener edge.

Thanks so much to all for the feedback about this stone. I lapped it with a DMT 325 and used it without slurry to refresh the edge of my 6/8 Dovo Best. Absolutely loved the feel of this stone--so smooth, almost velvety. (First time trying a coticule, very new at this, have only used a Norton 4/8 for a short time.) About 10 light strokes and could see the water turn faintly grey. Followed it with 10 strokes on CrO2/balsa then 30 strokes on leather strop. Very pleased with result, both in sharpness and comfort. Very pleased with this stone!

Still curious about whether this is a combo stone with BBW on the back, or attached to an un-usable schist.

Lap the base or just rub it with wetndri, wet. If the slurry is purple it's BBW...

Yes, do this to find out. I've never seen a vintage that wasn't backed by BBW, thought I'd come into one a month or so ago and almost got quite excited about it. Once lapped, BBW.
