Default more than a barbers hone?

If I were to get a non honed razor to get practice on..would I still need to put a bevel on it..or is it to assume the edge is there and just sharpen it up?..does it go both ways with non honed razors?

Probably, yes it will need a bevel set. It depends a little on what you mean, an ebay special-almost certainly, a new Dovo or Thiers Issard-you can get lucky but may not. Barber's hones were made for maintenance purposes and often perform that function very capably so that if you want to practice maintaining an already sharpened razor they would work very well, if you wanted to practice sharpening one from scratch, good luck with that one.

You really won't know until you have it in your hands. I've bought razors that needed the bevel set. I've also bought razors that needed only the slightest touch up. In genereal, it's probably safer to assume that it's going to need the bevel set.

Pray for the best, assume the worst.
