Default Gifted a "set" of hones...

A buddy recently gifted me a set of completely unused hones (he is getting out the the hobby for unexplained reasons). They are

    1 Norton 4K
    1 Norton 8K
1 balsa bench hone untreated (but a tub of green paste)
    1 PHIG

All my razors, except for the Hart gifted to me from my wife, were honed by Lynn at purchase. I really only wish to maintain the edge on my razors, but would like to hang on to the stones in the event that I come across something vintage that needs some work.

My question is this... would the PHIG be fine for maintenance, probably supplemented with the pasted balsa, or should I search around and find a barbers hone at some point in time?

In answer to your question...yes, the PHIG and pasted balsa should do a fine job for maintaining an edge

Yeah, I think you're good to go. If you get a barber hone, it'll just be to see for yourself. That's why I got my five.

Much appreciated. I guess I'll set the Norton's in the workshop for a rainy day

It's an unmarked tub, but I asked him where he got it. I believe it is chrome ox from Classic Shaving. Looks similar in packaging

I'm seeing if I can convince him to let me have first crack at his collection of razors. I think I've got just about eveything else that he had, including a couple strops that I'll wind up pasting/spraying, I'm sure.

Yep, I own all those as well, along with a bunch of others, but that was basically my starter set as well, throw in a 800 and 1k King, and a DMT D8C with stone holder. I also added a diamond felt paddle strop, the CrOx and balsa paddle.

I used my PHIG as a barber hone for quite a while until I found barber hones. I leave my phig now for a finisher and use my barbers for maintenance. Just a fun way to use as many stones as I can.

You will find that the 4k works wonders on knife edges as well. The 8k polishes knifes very nicely too.

    Just my 2 cents mate!!

Have fun with your new collection!
