Thread: Identify My Hone!

I just purchased about 10 hones off ebay, all on the cheap, in the hopes that one would be a thuringian or at least a suitable finishing hone. (no pics as of yet, but this should be fun!)

I was hoping you could help me identify one of the stones I have high hopes for, based on these characteristics:

1) this is a dark grey stone which turns black with water
2) this stone is 7" long and 2" wide, and 1" deep
3) this stone laps and makes slurry as easily as a coticule
4) this stone looks like any one of these stones: a dragon's tongue hone, a slate hone, a thuringian hone
5) this stone is very uniform in color and texture. It has a very fine texture, and provides feedback on honing. A "soft" feel.
6) this stone came in a wooden box made for the stone, which looks home made, and is about 100 years old, based on the feel and look of the finish.
7) the slurry smells like chalk and dirt
8) the slurry is very fine, and has color tones of gray, yellow, brown, and green with a heavy slurry off a DMT. HOWEVER, the slurry is cream colored, grayish, with a light slurry off the slurry stone.
9) the stone has NO inclusions
10) I cannot see sediment lines in the sides of the stone.
11) the stone improves my razor's edge off my coticule with 10 passes each side.

Any ideas?

Given that you know how the stone can fit into your progression, I wouldn't worry too much about what it actually is. But I understand it's nice to know what you've got.

I can't explain why, but I really want to know what kind of stone this is, I'm anal like that. I just want to know that I didn't buy a piece of roofing shingle that I treasure like a thuringian (which I've been obsessing over)

I think it would be helpful if, in the wiki, there was a collection of attributes and characteristics that would help people identify unknown hones that many members have a lot of experience with. This thuringian, in particular, looks very similar to several hones that aren't "it".

Send it to me and I will check it out for you. Probably just rubbish, but you can trust good old Jimbo to tell you the truth!

A picture is worth a thousand words. But sounds interestingly fine stone.

I'm going to have to put some pictures up. We'll pick this thread up when I can do that. I'm usually on my work computer when I'm messing on the internet, so I'll have to put some pics on my flash drive, lol.
