Thread: Interchanging Norton and Naniwa

My gf was attempting to buy me the Norton set from SRD (flattening stone, 220/1k, 4k/8k) but they were sold out of the 4/8k. So I received the flattening stone, 220/1k, and a gift certificate for about $80.

The questions are: Would there be little difference felt if I substituted the 4/8k Norton with a 3/8k Naniwa? Would my Norton flattening stone be alright to lap the Naniwa? Any other suggestions?

The flattening stone will be fine with a Naniwa, but I personally would get the Norton set. For whatever reason, I don't like mixing systems. No, there's no real good reason for it, but that's how it is. I do know the there are a lot of guys who swear by both, and there are some who have used both and prefer one over the other. I guess, I just used a lot of words to say there's really not a "wrong" answer, but I'd wait on the Norton.

I alternate sets a lot when honing. I will use the Chosera 1K to set a bevel and then either use Shapton Glass, Naniwa Super Stone or Norton for the 3K, 4K, 5K and 8K's and then will mix up the finishing stones between, Shapton Glass, Sigma or Naniwa Super Stones or Naturals. It actually is a lot of fun and results are usually similar. I have found that the Norton lapping plate gunks up when using it with the Naniwa's for some reason so I will usually use either DMT 325 or GDLP for cleaning and lapping.

Would that be the Sigma 13k, Lynn, and how do you like it?
I was thinking of the 1, 6, 13k deal.

Tis. I think it is a very nice stone and it produces consistent and reliable results.

yeah you can mix and match my progression is norton 1k naniwa 2k shapton pro 5k naniwa snow white 8k sgs 16k and then one of my natural finishers
