Thread: DMT 325 question

Here is the picture of the spot. Hope you guys can see it as the picture is abit blurry. This one is about 1 mm in diameter. There is one more spot which is maybe about 1/2 the size of this one.



@jeness I lapped the stones under running water. Though there were a few times that the stones stick together but then I just rinsed it off with water.

@pixelfixed it's about 1 mm in diameter. I agree for lapping it won't make much of a difference, but will it make much difference if I use it for sharpening my knives?

I think the plate is fine the way it is, and should work properly. However, It'd bother me too.

DMT (and SRP, too) recommends breaking in the lapping plate before using it. Sometimes there are high diamond spots, which will scratch up the hones you are trying to lap. Take a screwdriver shank or something similar and run it across the DMT for a few minutes, or you can hone some kitchen knives with it.

Does breaking in the DMT with a screwdriver shank need to be done under water/running water? Any other procedure steps to do this right?

No need to do it under running water, just wet the surface and you will be ok. You don't have to use a screwdriver either, any piece of steel will do the trick, cheap kitchen knife, back of a chisel etc. Make sure you don't apply too much pressure, a light-medium amount of it is perfect.

New DMTs generally have some extra diamonds on their surface which tends to scratch softer hones, and sometimes the harder ones too. If you knock these off with anything thats made of steel, than you will be OK.
