Another Whats This Hone Thread

I bought this stone at a antique store. Here are some pictures of my new stone between to my hindostan (I think it is a hindostan) and a coticule. I am trying to figure out what the stone in the middle is, I put the other stones in for reference. The stone absorbs more water and makes more slurry than an Arkansas stone.

The edges off of the stone are good, smoother shaving than an 8k norton. I was happy with the shave straight off of the hone.

this is a hard one to figure out . the stone in the middle looks more like a hindostan but its not if it absorbs water at first looking at the stone in the middle i thought it was a washita but a washita is no where near a 8k . so how hard is the stone ? what do you think its made of sand , mud , clay , novaculite , chert ?

My guess would be clay, The stone powders when dry sanding it on sandpaper. I would say it was closer to soft than hard. I know my answers are vague but thats the best I can guess.

no thats great info i thought it was a soft stone from the erosion on the back side of the stone . still cant id the stone but with the info out there someone will

Looks to me like a chunk of travertine. *shrugs* Some people will hone on anything...

Hopefully a stone junkie will recognize this!

Here is my Hindostan (I think that's what it is)
It looks very similar, mine is very thirsty and cuts very fast with slurry and also is a fine finisher with oil

if your stone absorbs water or oil its not a hindostan. a hindostan is way to dense of a stone to let water or oil penetrate it
