    Default hone lapping

i have ordered a naniwa 12 k stone and have been told that they need lapped befor use.... i have looked at the lapping 101 on here and wanted to hear from who has tried this way and how well it worked. Hone Lapping 101 - Straight Razor Place Wiki and if anyone has any other way of lapping a hone i would love to hear a couple different ways of doing so...

I have lapped that way. Did it on the breakfast counter. Works, but makes a heck of a mess and the grit from the lapping left scratches on the counter. My wife was not impressed. Most of the members here, including me, use the DMT 325 from SRD DMT 8 Dia-Sharp® Continuous Diamond Coarse - 325 - $46.99 : It doesn't need lapped and works very well for lapping almost any hone/stone you may acquire and will last for a long/long time with normal use. You can find many threads on it through the search function. Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Howard

Edit: if you do decide on the DMT, before you use it on the 12k, or any hone, use the shaft of a screwdriver and run it over the surface to, basically break it in. They can have diamond chips that, when new, will stick up a little and scratch the hone. You can also sharpen a couple of kitchen knives and accomplish the same thing.

Edit 2: Do a search on youtube for gssixgun he's a senior moderator here. He uses the DMT in a majority of his videos, plus you'll learn a lot about lapping and honing from him!!! Good Luck!! Howard
