    Default Substitute for slurry stone

I recently bought a 2-in-1 hone, one side being a Belgian blue whetstone and the other a yellow coticule. I read that it's best to create a little slurry while honing on the BBW, but the hone came without a slurry stone. Any ideas for an alternative?

On that note, what sorts of material should definitely not be applied to the hone?

For your slurry, a diamond stone will generate all the slurry you could ever need or want.

"...what sorts of material should definitely not be applied to the hone?" Extreme heat or cold could cause the stone to crack, don't drop it. Otherwise, they are a rock, pretty tough...

    +1 above.
This probably goes without saying, but here it is anyway. Don't try to slurry with a norton or other type of hone that can sluff off its own grit.

Straight Razor Designs and The Superior Shave sells individual Coticule slurry stones. Or you could use a DMT 325.

You'll want to be able to work up a slurry on the BBW side AND the Coti side. Traditionally, one uses a slurry stone of the same material as the hone. Several online dealers sell little slurry stones for $10 or so. From what I've read, you don't want to use a slurry stone of a differing material as it could leave its residue on your hone. So, if you don't have a proper slurry stone, you might try a DMT 325 plate, which everyone seems to agree is a great lapping plate (to flatten and round off the edges of your hone...important!) but it also whips up a slurry double time. Some guys use wet/dry sandpaper for lapping, which works perfectly well too. For me, it just seems...right...to use a little Coti slurry stone on my Coti hone and a DMT 325 for lapping.

Lastly, I highly recommend you watch gssixgun's videos on honing. Very helpful.

You can also use a slurry stone made from another harder whetstone e.g. Guangxi. Another option is a creditcard sized DMT.

+1 for the credit card size DMT, very cheap, and will probably last a lifetime!!
