Thread: 3M micro abrasive paper

It is a personal preference. Chromium does make them more wear resistant, but by my opinion, nowhere near silicon, manganese or high vanadium content steel. I have spend around 500 hours trying to polish a 9260 steel katana with 1μm diamond lapping films following the correct steps, before the jizuya and hazuya, and I don't want to live this nightmare again. The steel has its limits, it can't really get finer than a specific degree.

I started honing with sandpaper (1K / 2K grit) and micro-abrasive film (5 micron), followed by CrOxide paste. It gave a usable edge. I suspect 2 micron paper would have helped considerably.

I'm planning on getting some to use on my razors as initial cost is a lot cheaper than hones. I plan to mount them on glass. Question is, what thickness of glass should I get? Will 1/4" be thick enough or should I go with 3/8?

This is great stuff, thanks for all the info - but I was asking about using the film in place of a barber's hone - refreshing an edge with 5-10 strokes per side on a quarter sheet. My razor honing knowledge is limited, so I am not sure if the answer lies in the information that has already been provided. Have any of you used the film for touch-ups and not just as your full-on honing procedure?

The thinner is good too, just glue it to something to get some height. Some scrap wood or anyhing is totally sufficient.

Depends on the film. The 1 micron film worked very fast for me, imo 5-10 strokes are good for a first touch-up. If it is no enough, repeat until satisfied

I recently purchased some ALOX lapping film on Amazon for a 1.49 a sheet, not a bad deal. Supposedly you can use the sheet for ten razors, I ordered 5 sheets of 3um and 1um. I heard that .3um can be harsh and cause a fragile edge which isn't much to be desired. I can't wait to try them out, but I have to wait for the mail, doh!

I am going to try this progression when I get the film:
1K hone, Shapton or DMT 1200.
3UM film
1UM film
Chromium oxide on linen strop.
