Thread: Stone opinion needed

I have been given the green light to purchase 2 stones. I only have a couple of Frictionite barbers hones now. My question is this:
Should I get a Chosera 1000 and a Norton 4k/8k combo stone? Or the Norton combo and a Naniwa 12000 super stone? I guess it all depends if one can set a good bevel on a 4000 grit stone. Opinions would be greatly appreciated

Depends what you want to use your stones for. For bevel setting on ebay specials a 1K and 4/8K combo would be great. Frictionites are said to be very fine barber hones (I don't own one so this is hearsay as far as I am concerned) so you don't need a 12K Naniwa as well unless you want to experiment with final polishers.
You can set a bevel with a 4K hone but a 1K would be very welcome if you want to hone out chips and frowns.

I agree, its really what your prefer and what you want to do. If you want to restore or take eBay's with dull blades to sharp, I'd get the Chosera 1k. If you just want to maintain already sharp or very near sharp blades in your rotation, then maybe the 12k Naniwa. IMO the Chosera 1k feels smother than a Norton 4k and can produce an extremely nice edge just by itself. Good Luck!!

If I had to buy stones, knowing what I know now, I would opt for the Chosera 1k and the norton 4/8. You can shave well off of an 8k if you have the skill to get it 'there'. If you don't have the skill to get it there yet, a 12k is not going to be utilised to its full potential. The 1k may not be needed that often, unless you're picking up ebay or antique store used razors, but if you do need it the 1k is mighty nice to have. Down the road you can add a 12k to the progression when your budget allows it. That is if you think you need it. I know a number of members are perfectly happy with the edges they get off of the 8k. Throw a little chrom-ox on a piece of leather or felt and you'll have something to put icing on the cake if you desire a little more smoothness. Just IMHO.

The chosera and norton is you best bet. Chosera is king for setting a bevel. You can shave off an 8k perfectly fine with crox but if the bevel is not set you wont want to.

I'd go with the Chosera 1K and a Coticule if I had to pick just two hones.

This would be my advice too!

Really depends what you're doing, as stated above. If you plan on messing with a lot of ebay razors, or the like, then get the 1k, and the 4/8k. If at this time you don't expect to do much work on ebay razors, then I would say get the 4/8 and get a DMT D8C for lapping your stones. You will save yourself a lot of trouble using the D8C rather than sandpaper. Just my 2cents worth!

I recently started using the Chosera 1K, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Coudnt I use the Norton flattening stone to flatten both the 1k and the 4/8 combo instead of the DMT?
