Thread: Slurry stone - do I need to lap it?

I am new to honing and just purchased a Nagura stone for building slurry. Up until now I've been using my masahiro 1500 grit stone.

Do I need to lap the nagura stone? First time I used it it seemed to leave some fairly course particles on the surface of the Norton 4/8K and I had some micro chipping.

I never have had to but if it needs it lapping it wouldn't hurt anything.

I don't see a reason to lap a slurry stone. After all you grind it against the honing stone to make slurry. What would be the advantage? Unless of course the slurry stone is harder than the hone then lapping might prevent doing damage to your hone.

I guess I wouldn't lap it any higher than 150-220. You're saying you feel like you got chunks of rock instead of microscopic slurry particles, right? I never had that happen, but yeah I wouldn't try to sharpen a razor with "chunky" slurry. Then again, I'm using coticules, so maybe this advice is just shyst...

Thanks for the replies. After using it the slurry seemed to have some larger particles in it that I could feel as I worked the razor and I had a bit of chipping in the edge. I'll give it another try on a test razor. If the problem seems to persist then I'll lap it.
