    Default Bevel help please

Ok so my 9/8 Geo. Wosten has what looks like a triple bevel and significant spine wear(from its 100+ years of people trying to hone it). It is a full wedge. I can not get a good bevel from tip to toe. I really dont want to ruin this razor.

I have a king 800/4000, king 6000, king 8k, chinese 12, and a Coti. I have never had to re-establish a bevel that looked like this.

I will try to get pics tomorrow, but if someone could give me a good game plan I would much appreciate that!!!

Have a look at Glens (gssixgun) video on You Tube - 'honing a smiling wedge.
That might give you some clues.
I haven't tried honing mine yet.

i might or might not use tape on the spine when initially setting the bevel, but if i did i would then take the tape off, dull on glass, and finish reseting the bevel without tape. there is no reason that you cant hone that razor untaped like any other razor. you've already got lots of hone wear, dont worry about it, it just adds character.

I think it is a near wedge, and not a wedge. I could be wrong as I am going from the pictures. If a near wedge, honing is simpler than with a wedge. And, the use of tape, while sometimes preferable, is not usually required.

Oh its a full wedge, there is no hollowing to it in the least...

    I have run it on 800, 4k, 6k, 8k, 12k
I have run it on a Coti
I can not shave with it
    I suck....

I really wish there was a honemeister in AZ to show me what I am missing...

I would not be beating yourself up to badly on this razor. These are the hardest out there to hone in my opinion. Usually there is significant wear as shown in your picture and the wear is not only uneven, but not the same on both sides. It can take many hours to get one of these to shave. You can try honing a ton of metal away to see if you can ever get it flat on a stone or you can do X's at a 45 degree angle or you can do rolling X's. In any of these scenarios based on my experience, you are usually in for the long haul.

    Hang in there.

Honing wedges is much more difficult that honing hollow grounds for most of us. You don't suck. You are normal!

Wedges will bust your balls. Just stick with it.

Larry, If they didnt shave so comfortably I would gladly give up on them! but alas there is nothing like a deadly sharp wedge!

Lynn, are there any video's on the rolling x or the 45degree? I am a visual learner
Or maybe you should just take a vacation to the sonoran desert and give all of us desert dogs a honing lesson!!! lol
