Thread: whats in my hone?

I have a norton 220/1k and on the 1k side and there seems to be an inperfection within it, has anyone else had this? It doesn't feel raised nor a divet yet is visible and eventualy rips through the tape on the spine... it is very small and is on the right hand side in the photo..

Should I keep on using this hone as it doesn't seem to impact the edge but I can definately feel it, and it rips through tape or should I keep lapping the stone on some 320 sandpaper till it dissapears? though don't know how deep it goes? this is very annoying as its the only 1k I have and is quite new but I no longer have the receipt.. and I'm not sute if it was there when I started using it... any advice would be great, thanks

Norton 1k is very aggressive stone, it will definitely wear the tape pretty fast. If you have to fix edges on that stone you will have to keep track of the tape wear and change it accordingly.

I'd recommend attempting to lap through it. If it's affecting your tape, it's affecting your edge.

My Norton 8k started to develop a strange coloring and grit pattern on one side, about an inch wide, and the full length of the hone. After some vigorous lapping, it was gone.

In my opinion, Norton's are cheap enough that even if you lap away a significant portion of the hone, you've still got enough to last you a good while.

Your other alternative is to hone around that spot with the X-pattern?

the problems seems to be that it wears right through to the spine in the exact spot of that blemish...?

by touch can you feel if the surface does not feel uniform? If the surface feels different at different spots of the stone, then lapping it might solve the issue, but otherwise I am more inclined to think you might have a technique issue.

I fear it is proberly both my technique and I do feel resistance at the blemish spot... I am pushing fairly hard as trying to set a bevel after removing a chip on the edge, which I might add I'm very close to giving up on and sending out as can't get a sharp edge...

Have you contacted Norton yet? They might replace it for you even without the receipt. If they will do that you don't have to worry about what is doing to your edge.

I haven't though that is a good idea - i'll give it a go...

If you can't get the hone replaced, I'd just dig out that little weirdity with the tip of a nail, or a screwdriver, or whatever will work. Having a little hole in a hone is no problem.
