Thread: Strange blade

I have honed maybe 30 blades to date some several times over. It's a wade and butcher seems like a full wedge. When I acquired it ther were hone marks in the middle of the blade. (lengthwise). One side being more predominant than the other. Also the toe and heel on one side of the bevel are very wide and on the other side the bevel is very wide in the middle. (warped?). I have tried to cut a sharp bevel but I can't seem to get this sharper than a dull knife. Used a Norton 4k a king 1k a king 800 will not pass TNT. Could use some assistance. Haven't figured how to send a pix yet

do you have any means of monitoring the bevels?
It is possible the bevel is not set yet. Try the magic marker test and see if there is any left on the bevels after a few swipes on the stones.

You're going to have to learn some new honing strokes to get a proper bevel on that wedge. Often a swooping, heel-leading stroke will get it. Follow the blade shape as closely as you can; the more swoop on the blade shape, the more swoop in your stroke. And-- listen to mainaman, he's a lot brighter than me, use that magic marker.

I think you would really benefit from using tape, at least 2 layers or more. From your description of the bevel it sounds like there is likely moderate to heavy honewear. Apply some tape and experiment with alternate strokes, especially heel-leading and possible a rolling x (if it doesn't stay in contact with the hone across the blade).

On this particular blade there appears to be a shoulder in the middle of the blade running lengthwise. On one side it was worn down considerably. I ended up putting on six layers of tape. I think that shoulder was keeping the edge away from the hone. I did create a bevel. Thanks all for the advise
