Polish Line/Hone Wear
I dont know why i did not think of asking this before, but my vintage razor i have been using has a pretty flat polish line on the spine. Would applying a few layers of electrical tape beef up the spine enough or am i just taking a shot in the dark?
How do you guys usually compensate for this on the hones?
Thanks!

Woo hoo!
It depends how much hone wear there is. (In case you hadn't seen that term before, "hone wear" refers to the area of the spine that is worn down due to honing). Adding a layer or 2 of tape would probably help bring the edge into line more quickly if the razor has a bit of wear. Do you have a photo of the razor so we can get an idea of how much wear it has?
Have you tried honing it without tape yet? I ask because you may not need to apply tape, but that is a personal preference of mine since I prefer not to use tape if I don't have to.

yea show us a pic of the razor and if the hone wear is real bad then a layer of tape will definitally help put the blade where it should be.

That really isn't that bad. Also, the spine and edge wear together, keeping the bevel angle pretty consistent. You don't need to thicken the spine to get a good edge.
If you want to tape her, you sure can. Personally, I don't use tape unless I have a good reason.

That'll hone out fine without tape. Honewear is a little overrated and talked about too much, I don't use tape on any razors, not even wedges. Hone wear is natural and happens, its a part of the life of the razor.

IIRC, Tim Zowada calculated that adding one layer of 3M electrical tape, model 33T, adds about .75 degree to the angle. I do not recall if that if that was on each side or the total change, included angle. What you really need to watch is the width of the bevel. The wider it is then the longer it takes to hone and the weaker the edge ( it is thinner).
Hope this helps,
