Thread: Honing Stone Progression Question

Hello All,
I am looking into getting started with some restoration and honing and was hoping for advice. I have decided to start with a few old sheffields I was able to pick up at some estate sales. They all have some minor stains, but no real rust, chips or any other major damage. The main problem is that none of them are anywhere close to shave ready.

I have been looking into getting a set of hones, and have come up with this so far.

Shapton Ceramic on Glass 2000 Grit - to set the bevel
Belgium Blue Whetstone and
Naniwa 8000 grit - to clean up the edge
0.5 micron CrOX - to give it the last finishing touch

Just wondering if this will get me to a shave ready edge if used correctly or if there are other stones i should be looking into

You are bouncing all over the place..

Get the combo Naniwa 3/8 or the Norton 4/8 match it with either of their 1k's to bevel set and you are done until the "HAD" catches you

Either of those sets will do everything you ever need to do and they are easily expandable to the realm of what you want to do...

Please understand the only difference between "need" and "want" in this hobby is about 1% in edge improvement and $$$$

I will definitly be following the JaNorton 2012 thread, looks like it'll be quite the source for honing tips

I think I am set on getting the Norton 1k and 4k/8k combo.

With that setup, would it be worth it to get the .5 micron crox to help finish up the edge, or would it be better to just focus on getting the best edge with the 8k until my technique gets better.

The CrOX is a great add on

It was either BillS or Lynn that put it the best sometime back
