Default How to take the "Less Is More" approach to honing and stropping with pastes?

I have yet to hone a razor, but I have read that "less is more" when it comes to honing on stones and stropping on pastes. How do I take this approach when I first start to hone my razors? I'd like to get it right the first time if possible.

You won't get it right the 1st time: you'll learn by trial and error.
