Thread: A Collage of Hones and results

I was just thinking, it would be really cool to put together a collage of pictures of an edge off of the different hones/whetstones. Like microscopic pictures of an edge after being honed on the chosera, norton,king and all the favorites for bevel setters. Then the same all for the most popular grits and stones, like a microscopic pic collage of an edge off of the 4k different stones. Then 8k, then higher grits and so on. Then lastly a collage of all the high end finishers. I don't have a microscope nor do I have enough stones to do so, but I thought maybe I could collect pics from others on this thread to make the collage. I would collect and edit and title the different groupings. So if you would like to help just say so!

The problem is you need to take pics of the bevels at the same angle to be able to compare. Then that also does not tell the whole story because when you change the angle you will see scratches that were not seen in the first point of view. Then there is the pressure used for the honing, and may be the steel so you have a bunch of parameters that are probably impossible to replicate for multiple stones. Those factors combined will lead to inconclusive results.
There have been threads made about different finishes, but none of those ever made it to the wiki as any kind of reference point.

Yes, it is not a bad idea at all but as has already been mentioned, to get anything useful from it there would probably need to be a lot of factors controlled for and that would be difficult to do across the number of people you'd need to involve to get enough hones etc in the mix.

Now if you could convince people to send you their stones and the various razors and steel types....

Yeah I know it would be far from a perfect controlled experiment, but then again the uncertainty principle applies to everything. I already knew it wouldn't be perfect, just thought it would be cool none the less even if it only revealed little.
