I also use to moisturize... Thentix. I get it at Thentix
Highly recommend both products.

try a type of cream that is oil based, like a lotion, something that will cling while under water, as opposed to a soap based, and try and shave under water while sitting in the tub. betcha you get a close shave and no irritation

There is a pre shaving lotion type of stuff, "No Bumps" i believe, usually a blue, lightly beaded gel. You apply it evenly and then shave over, it helps out A LOT.

I normally take a LONG super hot bath till it's luke warm, then I have a tub of Taylors unscented sensitive I use just for that area. To add to the prep I add a good amount if usually baby oil to the area before lathering, I now and then use Trumpers skin food as well then lather.
But yes I found using a good balm helps a great deal, also! Have you tried witch hazel then a balm?? I found it works better than just balm, also next day after I have had a shower I again apply WH then a light application of balm.

I have tried the alum block. Not the best idea for the sensitive areas, burned like hell, but worked good. Normally for me I have some Crabtree and Evelyn post shave lotion that works good. I says it's unscented but actually has a really nice smell. I guess with all the products out there to help you just have to find whats right for you

I don't think I'm brave enough to shave my man parts with a straight. I'd hate to have to explain to the emergency room doc just how I managed to cut off my member. That and I'm allergic to pain.
Can you imagine having to call in sick to work because of that? Not what I'd want my boss and coworkers to know.
One thing I know about shaving below the belt is that a Schick Quattro left me with painful, itchy, burning razor bump zits at every hair follicle.
It looked like my crotch had been attacked by fire ants.
Most unpleasant.
I had to use a needle to pop and drain them. Then I applied a salicylic acid bearing zit medicine to the area.
Not my best week.
That Quattro wasn't much better for my face, either. Though it was great for shaving my head. My face felt like I'd shaved with a chainsaw or belt sander.

Thou art mad, yet brave folk!
I would never shave below the belt with a straight. I use an electric trimmer for that ;-)
I still need to convince my girlfriend to abandon the Mach3 Blades and get a DE... But she's scared
/edit: at least she's using mach3 blades instead of the (supposedly) inferior Lady shaving equivalent thingies.

Personally I've found that regular shaving is the best cure for bumps below the belt. Set your schedule and stick to it. I found it much easier to work my way up, as I read in a previous reply, and then get to the point where it was every other day. The only issue with that is, when I got to that point, if I missed even one shave, I was back to bump city, and apparently my skin had to regain its tolerance for the abuse. It didn't take as long, however, and within a week I was back to no bumps. One thing I've found that works amazingly well for razor bumps anywhere is simple A&D ointment. This stuff is incredible. I swear by it as a father, a tattoo artist, and a daily (or almost) shaver. This stuff is incredible.
It doesn't have antibiotic properties like triple antibiotic, however, so I may have to try that the next time I have any issues.
