Thread: Stubble required?

I am about to do my first leg shave with a straight razor. I'm not scared, but I am curious. Is it necessary to have appreciable "whiskerage" to do this? I mean, I shave about every day with the "safety" razor (from which, yes, I have a big old scar!) and wonder if there is a certain amount of growth required to use a Straight? Or am I over thinking this?

You should just be able do crack on with it. A few of the fella's have reported better shaves with a few day's stubble behind them, but largely, i don't think it makes any difference.
I've never tried myself, but i'd imagine the ankles will be the equivalent of the chin. A bit of a challenge to master!

IMHO, I need a little bit of stubble for my comfort. Now faces and legs are different so far as hair follicle thickness goes, so stubble may not be needed. I only shave test on my legs and that is done dry.

I find shaving is more rewarding with a few days' (or in my case, weeks') growth to cut through, but I've also been known to shave every other day with no trouble at all, so it's really up to you.

+1 to Lillith, I usually wait at least 3-4 days in between shaves unless I have something important I need to look and feel my best for. Str8 shaves seem to last longer than DE shaves although if I am in a hurry the DE's are better than nothing.

Welcome to SRP and congrats on taking the plunge with a straight. I find I get a better shave with a little stubble. I've also noticed that the re-growth is slower since switching to using a straight, compared to my old disposables.

I also have some nice scars from my straight learning curve, the photo's are posted on this section somewhere! I had my first custom blade land in the post today, haven't had chance to take it for a test drive yet but I can't wait.

I also agree with Silver, the smaller the stub the easier to shave and the l onger it takes to regrow. So far no accidents......

While I'm all for shaving, I prefer to wax my legs.
The hair that comes back is fewer and it does have a point, whereas a shaved hair comes back stubbly.
You need them longer to grip them well though.

A shave ready razor should do the job!
