Welcome aboard. What would draw him closer to you, learning with you or you being prepared and treating him as a king. Tough call, and one you'll ultimately have to make. You can learn a lot here start with the wiki for beginners and I believe there is a section on shaving others. As for beginning "cheap" lets change that to "cost effective". A cheap razor can spell disaster because it may not hold it's edge and from personal experience I get cut more when my razor is needing a touched up. Straight Razor Design has some starter sets from about $160. Straight Razor Wet Shaving Sets : Straight Razor Designs, The Finest In Gentlemens Shaving And Grooming Needs

Any way you go enjoy, and welcome again. Talk to the ladies they will probably have you shaving yourself first.

Learning together is a great way to build a stronger bond between you and your SO. I would recomment learning to shave on yourself before you start shaving your SO. And once he gets the basics down he can shave your legs also. Give you both a goal to work towards, Learn together now and maybe for Christmas shave each other.

For xmas there's always a nice new TI, bar of shave soap, new strop or whatever else. Don't wait just because it isn't xmas yet.

    hahah! you guys are great.

The only reason why I wanted it to wait because last x-mas and B-day was so hard to get him something, but this will open up those options.

I have also looked at the members map and sad there are only three of us here in the city. My next question was any one around here willing to give a hone lesson or two? i have looked at youtubes, guides ect, but i just really dont want to mess up the razor and then learn to fix it or worse.

Well before being introduced to this wonderful place i was getting to the idea that might I dare try this man's razor on my self to possibly practice??? I must tell you that the first person I talked to about this was a barber I called who was top on yelp and he was extremely negative about learning. I then felt like I was in on this thing alone.

    This has been really helpful

    thanks!

Just Checked out the Straight Razor Wet Shaving Sets link. yes I was trying "cost effective" but that also ment running around getting every thing from diffrent places. this is sooo much better especially now that I am looking in to getting two sets.

    Awesome!

Barbers dont learn these skills anymore, so dont let his opinion inhibit you. You will find all the help you need here @ SRP. Have fun!

+1 on Nun2Sharp's post. I found Barber's to be a bit of a hinderance in the learning process.

What I would recommend, it helped me a great deal, is to purchase Lynn's DVD which covers shaving, honing and a variety of other things. Great piece of info that you can refer back to at any time. Apologies if this has already been mentioned and I missed it.

    Enjoy and good luck.

Welcome to SRP! I vote learn together as well.

My hubby got the jump on learning (by 2 weeks) but we are in it together now. I find it fun to watch him and learn how he conquers the challenging parts of his face and try to incorporate that to my shave.

Ohhh the fun you will have! Learning together, yeah, I agree with that. Might wanna shave the balloons outside. Shave cream splatters when the balloon pops. (never mind how I know that)
