Welcome, you have a Battalion of shavers here to help you get through the learning curve, take advantage of the collective knowledge, it also makes us feel a bit smarter .
People wonder where the time goes, I wonder where it comes from.

Hi and welcome aboard. Good idea to check for local help as well. Cuts the learning curve and can likely help with most issues that arise. My vote is for the straight. Another strop option is a decent one with replacement pieces like srd. Quality to last but replaceable if needed.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Yeah I'm gonna go with a straight. I've been lurking around to see if anyone is within a reasonable distance from me but no luck yet. It'd be nice if I could hold one justnto see if I even like the feel of it. I'm a very tactile person so if something "feels" strange to me I won't use it. That's one of the reasons the shavette isn't looking like a great option. People say they feel different, and how they describe it sounds hollow or light.... the replaceable strop seems like a great idea. I have one but I've beat it a bit with my kitchen cutlery. Granted it's 15 years old.

Well list your location and they will find you, NY is not exactly a location, it's just a state. Tc
