    Default New Beauty Student

Hi! My name is Liz, i'm new to this site in hopes of having some of the "old timers" help me find the best razors that will last me. I know there are all sorts of forums. But to me it seems it's more of user ability and varying brands/styles that are the best. I will discover this in time. But if there are any other sites to purchase ect that you feel are the best, I'd love the input!!

My goal is after beauty school I'll be the one woman in the place that give a man a true male-pamper session which includes a straight shave! We gotta get back to the old days, I feel. Men need to be pampered, and I want to be the one to do it!

    THank you for reading!!

In most states you must have a barber's license to give straight razor shaves. The regulatory boards are separate and require different schooling and testing.

Not to say your idea isn't a great one. I'm about to start barber schooling so that I can do much the same thing.

Additionally most state laws make it difficult to use a true straight for sanitation reasons. It is pretty common across the board to use shavette-style razors instead.

The one place to avoid buying from is Ebay. Many a mistake has been made there. There are a good many quality vintage razors for sale on Ebay but also a fair number of poor quality new razors.

One reliable source for quality vintage razors is here in the SRP Classified ads section.

Some names of quality new mfg are Dovo, Theirs-Issard, Boker, Henckels, Wacker. None are cheap.

We do have a Ladies forum that you may find useful but the place to start is the Wiki. Then start asking questions in the other forums.

It would help you to connect to someone in your area. I will send you a PM with the procedure to locate Str8 razor users in your area.

    Welcome to SRP,

    Default Thank you all!

Wow! Good information! THank you. I'll have to ask about how I can be allowed to do a straight razor shave on men and all the technicalities. Otherwise i'll just pamper those nearest and dearest to me as a loved one instead of a stylist!

I"ll have to follow the directions on meeting people in my area who can get me hooked up as well.

Thank you! Thank you@ Thank you!

I would say read as much as you can here in the forums to find what you are looking for...it helped me a ton...course I've become an addict now LOL! It helped me to look at local thrift stores and antique shops....course a happy shave is a properly honed blade...make sure blades are shave ready before trying on any of your volunteers! You will find tons of info on here!!

Welcome.. I see you are also from Michigan. I know there is a chain shop on the west side of the state called Jude's Barbershop that does the shavette style straight shaves and I know there is a similar place on the east side of the state as well but can't remember the name. You may want to go and talk to some of the people there about regulations to get a clearer picture.

I also have a friend from high school who runs the family owned barbershop and I believe his father and grandfather still give traditional straight shaves there as well but I have not had a chance to make it there to find out for sure. The last I heard it was more due to convenience that they use shavette style razors in Michigan for sanitation purposes as Barbicide is mandatory and can damage the scales of traditional straights so it is easier to just switch out the blades.

Welcome to SRP! My wife is still a bit intimidated at the thought of my using a straight, but I have hopes she'll come around given some time.

This is a great place to learn all of the ins and outs of straight razor shaving. Best of luck on your adventure!

    Can you come over! LOL

Hey Mods, its just a joke! My wife will beat me later!

Back on topic, buy new stuff from the vendors here on this forum, its all quality and its all garaunteed to perform. Ask them plenty of questions, they will know more about what you need than you will. Thats not a slam, its encouragement. They will be able to help you make the most informed decision possible. I wish you all possible luck, we truly need some more like you. Regards, Kelly
