Thread: soon to be new straight shaver

Been thinking about straight shaving, and have been looking everywhere for any and all info about it. Recently picked up a couple of old razors, and began cleaning them up, getting ready for the hone. Have a strop on order. Getting pre/post shave items this weekend, and maybe within a week or two, I may start my first shave. Great site for info, and have been looking around for about a week now, and thought I may as well join........so here I am.

Welcome aboard! Refer to the Wiki to answer most of your questions. I would suggest sending your SR to one of the honemeisters on this site, so you can have a good idea of what a properly honed razor should be like. Trying to learn to properly hone at the same time you're trying to straight shave can be a recipe for disaster.

Welcome to the forum. After you finish cleaning up those razors, may I suggest you send them to someone who will make them truly shave ready? You'll have enough to learn, without needing to complicate things more with the hones. Get those razors to a honer!

Sound advice here, especially about having them honed. I'll add my encouragement and this: don't give up. This hobby can be frustrating at first, but the rewards are great.

Straight shaving comes with a learning curve, the more variables you can eliminate while learning the better. If you use canned foam or gel currently change to a brush and soap or cream before you go for a straight and get used to making a good lather, Also as has been said already have at least one of your razors honed by an experienced honer then you will know what sharp feels like on the face and you'll know what you are aiming for when you start honing yourself.
