Thread: From lurking to the light

Hello. I am new to straight razors having begun about 6 months ago. Presently using three Torrey razors(one I rehandled and restored, all I hone). Mostly get through a shave without incident now but I still am not able to shave ATG as I have very sensitive skin and low angle whiskers. Blue handled twin blades can leave me razor burned if I use them for more than a pass or two. I have a Tweezeman brush due for an upgrade to silvertip and use Proraso(great stuff). I have been using a soft leather belt for stropping and I have an assortment of stones including a Norton 1k/8k. I have a StropBat from JRE than is loaded with emory, crox, and rouge which has done a great job of bringing back an old chipped razor.

I am curious, did the stropbat take out the chips in the old razor?

Hello Hog...It took several hours one afternoon/evening(but I am very slow) using the emery pasted side first then the CrOx then the smooth leather but I finished with a successful HHT and a shave the next morning. The chips were small but easily visible to the naked eye. Most about the size of a period on the page with one about 2x larger.

Since then I have obtained a Norton 1k/8k which is much quicker. I have other stones to fill the 1k/8k gap but I haven't needed anything more.

Welcome Jaswarb You've got a good start so far, and your over the hump that we all have when we first start. After staying with it this far you are most likely hooked like the rest of us poor souls.

I'll warn you this can snowball. I give you 6 more months and you'll be well on your way to 2 dozen razors, 3 different shave creams, at least 2 new colognes and 1 good preshave product.

Hold on tight, every roller coaster picks up speed after you get over the first hump.
