Thread: Microscope Improvement

I just picked up this little inexpensive 60x to 100x pocket microscope I saw some of the people in a honing video using. It's not bad on it's own but I have a hard time holding it still over the blade good enough to get a good look at the edge. so I made this little jig out of some scrap wood I had in the garage.
If any one is interested in more details I'd be happy to explain more.

+1, for me they ain't worth what little they cost.

Sometimes trying to find the right light to see the bevel can be a crafty task, I see you have resolved it.

Yeah I'm on a real tight budget right now and saw these so I figured it'd be decent till I can pic up a good one hopefully a USB digital microscope.
The jig has a magnet in the part the razor is on and that piece slides back and forth to view different sections of the blade. The LED flashlight is a huge improvement over the little light in the scope.
I wish I had a different way to hold the blade still though as I can now sea why magnets aren't good around Razors, Lots of tiny metal pieces clinging to the magnetized blade YIKES.

For a very few bucks you can get a de-magnetizer at radio shack. You just pass the blade through it and no more magnetism.

Thank you JimmyHAD I was trying to use masking tape to get the slivers off and was starting to feel defeated knowing it would just pick up more.
I will have to make another trip to the shack thats where I got the scope.

Believe it or not all of these low resolution microscopes actually come from similar devices they made back in the 1960s to inspect the stylus' used in playing vinyl records.

Interesting by stylus do you mean what they used as the needle or the actual groves in the vinyl.

To inspect the needle itself for wear.
