Thread: Ballistol Oil

Howdy all,

So when I got my le grelot I was sent a bottle of this ballistol oil with it. I read some posts about it and decided I'd use it between shaves to protect my blade.

I have been noticing something funny tho. When I put it on it's fine but when I take it out for the next shave it's like a gel on the blade.

Is this supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong. Any help will be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it happens with all types of oil, including Camellia oil. I use "Goo Gone" the citrus based stuff to clean it off. It works great...! It's a great cleaner, citrus based, leaves no residue, no harm to your blades.

This gel wipes away easy with a tissue so it doesn't stain or anything.

I wouldn't put Ballistol on my razor unless I thought I probably wouldn't be shooting it for a while.

I wonder if Break-Free would make it slide across my skin better?

I have not heard of the jelling quality. I use it and never get that but I will admit I mix a little CrosionX in with it. No matter what, I oil my razors between shaves to prevent rust and to make the edge last longer. The steel looks like new on my razors.

My first high priced razor was dried and put away and in a couple of days I came back to it to find a couple of black spots. I was sick! Since then rinse the blade with hot water, wipe it and lay it on the bar towel that I have on the counter top. I then rinse my brush and bowls and come back to it, oil it and put it away on the shelf to air dry. Next morning if it is not going to be used I put it in its sheath and put it away.

I oil with Ballistol but I have never seen the gel effect.

GastonD I think your experience with Ballistol is very limited to its use as an excellent cleaner/lubricant for firearms. However it has many other great uses and is quite commonly used to protect razors. And since you mentioned it I think you should be the first to try Break-Free but make sure you report back to us about its toxic merits.

I have used Ballistol for years, obviously for cleaning and lubing guns. I also mix it with some baking soda and water to make a spray for my garden plants. It wonderfully protects against a variety of bugs and biting things.

Straight ballistol liquid applied to a blade can look somewhat like a gel later, but it's nothing to worry about. It wipes off easily and does no harm to the blade. Indeed, German rifles lubed and wiped with ballistol and stored in the 1930's have been opened in the 2000's and found to be in perfect working order once the ballistol was wiped off.

Ballistol was invented in the early 20th century when the German army needed a single substance to clean and lube guns, condition leather belts and straps, condition the wood of gun stocks, and even soften and treat some wounds. It was going to be adopted by the US Army but the outbreak of WWI seems to have spoiled the appeal of German products for the US military.

Ballistol is non toxic though I wouldn't suggest ingesting it.

I spray it on my pets, children, even my wife, and they all seem happier and better behaved.

The only thing that does more jobs, better than ballistol is my 1911 .45 ACP semi-automatic pistol, which can penetrate armored cars, turn back hordes of restless natives, bring down fighter airplanes, drive tent stakes, and still have 2 rounds left in the magazine…

Love Ballistol! As Lawason says, it does everything. It even improved my son's reading scores and I don't even have children.

Basil, I know the gel effect of which you speak. Nothing to worry about but I suspect you're using more than you need to if you can see it.

After I rinse and dry my razor, I put a wee drop of Ballistol on the blade and massage it in with my thumb and forefinger. Any remaining Ballistol on my fingers gets rubbed into my strop.

Since I started using Ballistol my Intelligence Quotient has increased by 20 points, but I've noticed my eyesight has deteriorated notably. :/

I've avoided contact with my strop when using ballistol Roy.
What effect, if any, does this have?
