Thread: Razor Box

Made a great buy the other day. Went looking for another brush. A local cigar shop is closing out and I wanted to check their brushes and mugs. They only had crappy brushes, But what I did find was a nice humidor, at 90 % off retail. So I got this for $45.
I made a few shelves, spaced and lined with felt. Two of the shelves are done.
What do you think?

i really like your cigar box design Sous! i picked up an antique cigar box and I'm going to borrow your divider idea!

That's very nice, I agree that it may be copied by more than one including me!

On construction: The lowest level is not a removable tray, just dividers. The other two are trays. I used 1/4" ply for the bottom of the tray, and strips of Bass wood 1/8"x1/2" for the dividers and sides. I joined them with simple lap joints, cut with a coping saw, and glued it all together with a clear craft epoxy type glue. I lined them all with felt, glued in place.
The spaces are 1 1/8" wide in the bottom row, the two trays they are 1" wide, except for one that is almost 1 1/2" (needed to accomodate my huge Tillotson). Also I left one space 3" wide to put my Rolls razor in if I wanted to.
The only thing I would do different is to stain the tops of the dividers to match the cedar of the box.

looks real good but just a random thought.. a humidor is supposed to keep the humidity in to keep the cigars from drying out.... wouldnt this mean the humidity from the box would eventually rust out your razors?

The box is designed to keep a stable humidity environment. You have to add a source of humidity inside the box . Without that source, there is no humidity, other than what was in the room when you opened the box.
If anything, you could put a silica pack inside and make sure it keeps a dry environment inside.

Great job with that humidor, looks very nice. In reality an unseasoned humidor such as yours is the ideal storage environment for your razors. Even if one of your razors was put away with any trace of moisture the spanish cedar would quickly absorb the moisture.

But is it expandable?

Expandable? You mean add more razors? I could have added one more tray, but I made a shadowbox display under the lid for my Great Grandfathers razor (see Family Jewels Thread)

You may have been kidding, but I actually thought this morning that I could modify the trays so that the slots are adjustable in width, to accomodate all the different size razors I come across.

But beyond holding the 30 razors, no it is not expandable. However, the place where I bought this did have others......
