Thread: Microscope

I have a razor that I'm trying to hone into a comfortable shaver and can't get my Radio Shack $14.99 special zeroed in on the blade to check it. I must have played the trombone with that thing for an hour last night.

Is there a good microscope out there I can use for this purpose that doesn't cost several hundred dollars?

What I want to do is compare this blade at a high magnification with another one that shaves great to see if there's an obvious reason why it doesn't shave well.

I'll attack your question from another viewpoint. First, by the way, your the third person I've replied to that had that exact same avatar over the years.

Anyway, you should place the razor flat on a table and place the microscope on top of the blade so that the microscope is supported on the spine of the razor and on the table just a hair above the edge.

Grounded as I describe the microscope becomes very simple and easy to use, although it views the edge backwards.

Does a current member have this avitar? If so, I'll change it. Bogart is my favorite all-time actor, which is the reason for my choice.

i have used same microscope for a long time. the easiest way i find out is
First focus the microscope on something else.
then don't touch the focus try check the edge. this way i always had success.

Good advice above. I have that Radio Shack light, too. And, it is a great tool, though a bit finicky at times. Keeping it flat and focusing on something else does help a lot.

I got this Pocket Microscope 30x Magnifier Illuminated LED NEW - eBay (item 180588717238 end time Jan-15-11 19:58:20 PST)
which is a fixed focal length of 30x so only thing you have to muck with is the focus. I think it helps some.

Other than that, how about a good loupe?
