Thread: old school kick.

When I was a young, granted I'm in my early 30s so this is relative, I remember going to the local barbershop with my dad for hair cuts. The barber had all kinds of bottles of various colored liquids in his shop. In any event my hair cut always finished with him grabbing one of these bottles with no discernible rhyme or reason pouring some of the liquid in his hand and then slapping it on the back of my neck and in my hair. The point of this is I remember always enjoying the smell of whatever it was, and the fun time I got to spend with my dad. Just curious if anyone might have some ideas as to if this was some kind of hair tonic or aftershave, and beyond that is there a place where I can get my hands on some of this more old school stuff to add to my shave den. I want to be able to feel everyday after my shave like I did all those years ago after a haircut with my dad.

Thats a good question and now that you mention it I remember mine doing the same thing.

IME Dickinson's Witch Hazel was not infrequently used for that by some barbers. Could have been a lot of things though.

If you're looking for an old school barbershop scent then give Pinaud Clubman a shot or any Bay Rum scent...they're about as old school babrbershop as they get.

The pinaud clubman or jeris(sp?) musk are probably the usual suspects if it wasn't witch hazel. I use the pinaud when I'm in the mood to go old school but my wife claims o smell like an old man. (But I take it as a compliment. My goal is to one day become a codger, or maybe even an old coot.)

I've had good luck finding Pinaud/Clubman Bay Rum along with some of their other products in beauty/barber supply stores. Dickinson's Witch Hazel is available in any pharmacy.

I one that the big box drugstore chain around here carries the Pinaud Clubman.

Aack... Please ignore my crazy grammar in that last post. So much for trying to post from my phone. I meant to say that I know the big box chain around me carries some Pinaud stuff (styptic pencils, Clubman aftershave and talc).

Typical barbers bought the cheapest stuff they could find. Dickinsons, Pinaud, Lucky Tiger etc.

I find it amusing how guys long and pine for those scents of yesteryear which in many ways were terrible stuff. I remember going to barbers in the 1950s for haircuts and the first thing I did when I got home is wash off the scents the best I could. Lillac Vegetal has always been a barber favorite. They bought it by the gallon for pennies and it was very popular stuff until the FDA found out it was a potent rodent poison killing on contact-Har har
