Thread: Snapshot of my new Becker scuttle.

Here are Robert's pictures of the scuttle he made for me. It's the standard large size in black. I should get it in the mail sometime next week and I can't wait to play with it! I will post more pics and reviews after it's arrival and use.

Excellent! I love the round bottom of the lather bowl. Mine is relatively square, which makes it a bit more difficult for swirling and such, but the lather is still excellent and hot. My next scuttle will have the curved bottom.

I have an R. Becker in green with no top that I think the world of. I fill it with water and put it in the microwave for 3-4 minutes and it keeps my lather nice and hot!!! Wonderful feeling warm/hot shaving lather!!!

Maxi, thanks I think the round bottom will be great, I really like the look of your scuttle though. It was after I saw yours that I decided to go with his pottery rather than Dirty Bird or Georgetown.

You will love it !! That bad boy holds a QUART/32oz of hot water. After i make my lather, i put my brush in the scuttle and then put the lid on. I then strop my razor,defog the mirror and by then the suds and brush are VERY WARM. ENJOY!! The scuttle wont win any beauty contests but it will out perform ANY scuttle out there.

You know....I think the lid is a key aspect. Many out there don't have them, and I remember a thread last fall about a man from Manitoba (Canada) making a new scuttle. He was a potter and went by the handle dgstr8 I believe. Anyway, there was a lot of debate on the lid.

I love the lid. After pass #1, I put the brush in the bowl and the lid on, and whammo....its hot forever. The suds breakdown a bit, but a quick dip in the reservoir, a little whip n' swirl, and we're back in business for pass #2.

Here you go gentlemen, the initial opening and first review of the Black Becker lather cooker!

My intial thought upon seeing this scuttle in person was, whoa this thing is gigantic! The top of the inner bowl measures 5.25 inches across and 2.75 inches deep! After building the initial lather I thought I might need to add a second almond sized dallop of cream just to feel like I produced something. You can see in the pictures my trusty Revol "France" lather bowl is dwarfed by the new scuttle. It feels good having lots of room to lather in but it will take time for me to get used to it. I am used to having the lather rise up into the bowl when I swirl but it spreads all over in the big scuttle. Here is a pro's and con's list I came up with as well as a description of some of the pics...

Pros:
1: Pretty to look at
2: Large
3: Gets hot and stays hot, I mean hot guys! She was baking at 25 minutes after the intial fill up with the hottest tap I could get. It felt really warm when I poured it out. "Keep in mind I did not dump and refill it".
Incorporates the size "plus some" of the Dirty Bird 1.5, the rubber stopper design of the Georgetown G5, and blows the doors off the small size of the Moss scuttle.

Cons:
1: The overall "look" as far as perfection is concerned is not on par with hand spun pottery such as the Dirty Bird. It is a great looking scuttle though don't get me wrong.

The first few are the un-boxing showing the care he took in packing this scuttle. Next are comparisons to my Revol lather bowl and a stainless bowl I use to enjoy excusively. The first clock picture is when I intitially filled up the scuttle. Next clock pic is when I made the initial lather. Last few clock pics are after letting the lather sit in the scuttle with the brush and the lid on.

Some after thoughts: When I filled it the first time with piping hot water from the tap, it was too hot for me and the lather cooked very quickly. The second fill was with hot water but not too hot. This resulted in a warm bowl but the lather and brush were not very warm. I think somewhere in between will be perfect for me and I will have to re-learn to lather in a new scuttle and in a different temperature environment. I hope you enjoyed the review! I recommend Robert's scuttles to anyone looking to get a great product at a great price. This was $27.00 plus shipping. He lives in San Antonio, TX so it only took one day for the scuttle to get to me (Austin) after he sent me the shipping confirmation yesterday. Great pics! I tried mine out this morning and absolutely love it. I couldn't believe I still had warm lather after 3 passes, I wanted to keep shaving!
