Thread: Shaving Bowls and Creativity

I just started SR shaving. For my lather I use a couple of bowls that I hand-threw on the potter's wheel in my Ceramics class (I'm in the 12th Grade) and eventually Raku fired using a lead-free glaze. They look nice and best of all they were free!

What does your shaving bowl look like?

Those look great! I'm just using a cereal bowl for now until I have some money to get something better.

i have a 40s old spice mug i WAS using...

now im using a $4 crate and barrell smaller bowl thats blue in color, about 4.5" deep, 6" around or so.. lathers GREAT...

i badly want a lip bowl from dirty bird.. badly...

ill probbaly sell the old spice mug to get it

Hmmm... I should try it. I'm no longer in ceramics this semester but my teacher would probably still let me come in and throw a scuttle on the potter's wheel. Compared to a simple bowl, a nice scuttle will be much more technically difficult, especially after only one semester of pottery!

They are awesome. Bigger is better imo. My shaving scuttle is over 6 inches wide. It aids in lather building. From left to right:

Gerogetown Pottery GP5, Dirty Bird 1.5, and Dirty Bird Double (my favorite)

The other two that look like flower pots are used inside a small potpourri crock pot, like a double boiler, or homemade scuttle.
One is from SRD, the other is custom made by Julie at Dirty Bird.

Those scuttles look awesome. I love the lip on the first, and the second looks to be the perfect size... why go so big with the third? I've read reviews where the large size has been found to be rather inefficient or even counter-productive because the lather spreads out rather than up. What do you think?

I only ask because I'm considering buying one.
