Thread: styptic powder

Do any of you guys remember Sun Ray styptic powder? is it still being made,And where can I get it?,I had one and it lasted for years,but I just blew a twenty year no cut streak and got my self.
I know how long its been since the last time I needed ie was when my son was two. Oh well,a good long run,but the pencil I have stinks,the powder hurt like hell but worked. Any help please?

my Dad's pencil had paper wrapped around it... he'd peel a little off when needed. I started with his 'Fat Boy' many years ago and used his pencil right down to the nub.

30 years later - I honed up grandpa's Larkin straight and started shaving with that! I got a vintage W. H. Morley and sons in mint condition and shave with that! I rarely need a pencil, but got one from CVS and have used it 4 times... I'm a little sad I don't have to peel the paper off, but the end result is about the same...

In the February 1957 edition of 'Science and Mechanics' there was an article 'Exploring The Science Of Shaving'.

In that article there was a recipe for a homemade styptic solution.

Mix together 30 g of potassium alum & 30 g of zinc suphate (heptahydrate ?), and grind into a fine powder. Dissolve in distilled water and make up to 1000 mL with distilled water.

I suppose you could use the alum/zinc sulphate mix as a stytic powder ?

Hi I found styptic matches very useful, based on potassium alum. very good old remedy. regards
