Thread: Ideas: Gear Storage out of the bathroom?

I am looking for ideas on a way to efficiently protect my shaving gear when not in use and keep it out of the bathroom.

I want something that I can open up, grab what I need to shave, go shave, clean and dry everything, and then put it back in the container for the next day.

I am opting to keep the stuff out of the bathroom to keep additional moisture at bay. Currently, my DEs sit in the medicine cabinet and they wind up getting coated in condensation.

My girl suggested some sort of cigar box. I'm not sure if something wooden is wise, or maybe some sort of modified tackle box, any other ideas?

Check the thread "the shave den again" lots of ideas in there. I have a $15 shelving unit from WW that most all my stuff sits on.

I guess it depends on how much stuff you have, or intend to have, that needs to be stored. If it would fit, I think a cigar box (or boxes) would work pretty well. Don't use something that seals airtight, like a plastic container. That will trap moisture right where you don't want it. I use a wooden tool chest with felt lined drawers for most of my stuff.

How about something like a tool bag? They have a lot of organizer pockets and won't trap moisture. I am not sure what size of container your looking for, but they come in a variety of sizes. You could check places like Snap-on-Tools, Sears, etc. But then again, they might be a bit overkill for everyday use.....

Another option is looking in to travel sections of various stores such as JC Penny, etc. There are a lot of toiletry bags for men that would keep things organized and safe.

You might check out Eboy, there are sites selling wood tool chests that depending on how much you have might fit your bill. I know Gestner makes them but their U.S made items are astronomic in price however they have a line of Asia made items that are reasonable.

I'm in the same boat. Have to keep the stuff out of a moisture prone bathroom and locked away from tiny hands. So I bought a tea box ($20) and mounted elastic inside the lid to hold razors. I modified the tea compartments to hold a bowl, brush, cream, DE/SE razors, barber hone, stytic, blades and aftershave. Everything in one box. Then I installed a clasp so it stays closed. Neat, tidy, and away from moisture and little hands.

You can always store your gear at my house. :-)

Or you can buy yourself some rolls from WhippedDog.com like I did (or make your own). I use a combo of rolls and small jewelry boxes in a free dresser drawer.

I've since built additional compartments into it for things like my barber hone, and 4 safety razors. I'm thinking of just making it a razor box at some point and keeping my shaving supplies that aren't actually razors on a shelf in the bathroom. But for now it holds everything just fine.

Isn't it true that the only thing you need to worry about being in the humidity of the bathroom is a carbon blade? If that's true, why not just keep straight razors outside the bathroom with everything else inside on a shelf? Your DEs are probably chromed so they can handle moisture without tarnishing.

One of my straight razors is stainless steel so I keep it on display in the bathroom with everything else, though I always oil my blades, carbon or stainless. In any case, I've had no rusting problems with that approach.
