    Default Honing App!

    Sorry, not really.
    But I had an idea....
A smart phone app as a honing learning tool?
presents a razor in various needs of work (chips, bevel, touch up)
choose your stone ( barbers hones / synthetics / naturals / dmt for lapping )
    tape or no tape?
    pre soak, spray bottle?
try out strokes, circles with by sliding your finger across the screen
hone out that chip and figure out why x stroke is necessary.
real time spine wear, worn out heels ect.

the best is yet to come....
points earned from sucessful honing redeemed at SRD ??

I realize honing isnt "cut and dry" and every razor has different needs, but I believe this would be a useful tool for learning basic honing - or killing time on the can

Someone will probably do it. Lynn? Are you hearing this? I am old and have no brainsinmy hand smartphone, but my employee does! That kid is fast on the draw! Smart! I told him to get me a small level the other day. Lo and behold he whipped out the phone and punched it a bit and handed me a smartphone level! Downloaded it just then! A nice one! On the app. An app should be developed, but using whose technique? Everyone has a different one. I, personally, think it should be based upon Lynn's pyramid. This is what made me start and develop my own preferences along the way as I am sure others will agree. IMHO.....Tom

I like Lynn's pyramid idea, I hadnt considered letting the app tell you what to do.
Regardless, I suppose if you didnt follow the directions you could still end up with "real time" uneven bevel/ spine wear.
I have seen so many "why does my razor look like this?". After making a razor or two look like "this" myself, and seeking help I realized that- my hones werent as flat as I thought, my razor wasnt bent like I thought, and even though I thought I was doing everything right, I wasnt.

This would be the "guitar hero" of honing!

I mean no offense, truly and honestly I don't.

This is a silly idea all around, and it would suck the fun out of honing. While I'm not an expert at honing or anything, I don't want my phone involved. When I started all I had were scraps of paper to serve as a reminder, and the odd printout of a pic to compare to my work. By trial and error, and reading of other's mistakes, I've zeroed in on what works for me and I've learned what to look for. As a new challenge (read: cheap bay razor) arrives, I read the forum, look for Glen's videos and rely on what has worked before to move forward and improve my ability and expand my set of skills.

FWIW I think Guitar Hero is stupid too, and while I don't think less of those who choose to play, I rather play the guitar than pretend to.

This, of course, it's just my opinion, and I'm sure some if not many will disagree.

May all your shaves be smooth,

    Marcos,
I also believe guitar hero is stupid but as stupid as it is, no one can deny that repetition is a valid learning tool.
I learned to hone the same way you did, videos, reading, questions and more questions.
Pilots, astronauts, race car drivers ect, use simulators to train and fine tune their skillsets - so why cant we?
I understand some of us are out of touch with technology, but future generations will depend on it.
Your certainly entitled to your opinion, but to say this is a silly idea is silly in itself.

    I'm not buying it.

I don't want an app for honing. We're old school around here. We shave with straights, hone for real, smoke pipes and stuff, and wear fedoras (that's goin' out to you JD!)....

What I want is more razors to hone......

I admit to being a borderline luddite but sliding your fingers across a screen will give you no point of reference or muscle memory for honing a razor but I see such an app as an aid nonetheless, from an information POV. So who's gonna create this app?

If you made an "Angry Hones" app I'd, like, buy it.
