    Default How to use Barbercide...

So I got a large jug of Barbecide in the mail today along with the jar, my question is...the writing on the jar is pretty rubbed off, but am I supposed to dilute this stuff? It is pretty dark and I don't recall it being that dark at my barbers......

If so how far should I dilute it? I want to sterilize some Safety razors I got that I want to try out

    Thanks in advance

It's two ounces per thirty two of cold water. Add the barbicide to the water, otherwise it foams. In barber school we used disposable razors and tossed the handles in barbicide to sanitize. It's basically a quaternary ammonium dealio - I think. It does not sterilize, that requires heat and pressure - like an autoclave.

    Very, thanks!.

I have a 21oz barbicide jar which I just filled and used a shot glass to add the actual chemical, now it looks like the color I remember

Sitka is correct on the mixture. I bought a bottle also. After I read all the warnings and looked at the color I decided I wasn't putting any scales in it, especially DD's, etc., nor did I want to get any of it on me. My wife picked it up for me or I would probably have left it at the store. I've never broken the seal on the lid! Since, I've poured rubbing alcohol on them after cleaning with a mild detergent and wearing rubber gloves. Evaporates quickly and I blow it out of the pivot and pins with compressed air and it's not going (exaggeration here) to disintegrate my arm if I spill it on myself or turn it over, etc.. Just my opinion! Good Luck!!

    Best Regards,

    Howard

Edit: I seem to have a knack for knocking things over that shouldn't be!!

    Ditto,

No scales, nothing that has any porosity. I rarely touch it. I have tongs, or whatever else, to pull out things immersed in quats. I caught safety razors in the original post and went from there. It was good for you to mention the other possible, less than perfect uses for barbicide, thanks.

Don't freak out mcgyver74. What you're doing is fine, no harm. Just don't drink it.

Yeah I bought it to clean some safety's I picked up, but i figure I can use it to clean (Blade only, no scales) some straights I got off Fleabay. Better safe then sorry IMHO

    Thanks again!

I agree with the previous posts. I hardly ever submerge a whole straight. I'll take the basket out and place a steel bar across glass span, and with one of those magnetic clips clip one side of the scale and hang it to the bar so the scales never touch fluid.

I don't go to such extremes, but I figure the only time my clean razor would have a one in a million chance to poison me would be if I cut myself with it...........just sayin...toolmakers, geeze! Kidding of course!

I believe that barbicide should be chged daily. To be and effective disinfectant it only needs to be in contact with the object for ten mins.
No, I don't follow that either... I keep it mixed for~ a week and soak razors or combs for most of the day . But that's me!
