Thread: Witch hazel

Thanks Fcc! I actually have some Prorazo Pre/Post Shave Cream I could try as my AS. Lets see how that works.

Question for all you experienced shavers out there: I've noticed that many of you guys use an ASB/ASC and then an AS splash. The balm moisturizes the skin and the AS splash (with alcohol) dries it out right? Don't they kind of cancel each other out?

AHHHG @#%@ I hate that usage, but to answer your question: If the balm contains some type of oil then it will probably prevent the alcohol from seriously drying out your skin.

Witch Hazel Rules. And its cheap. And I've found many other uses for it than just shaving. I follow a WH splash with an AS moisturizing balm as it hasn't got a lot of moisturizing abilities.

I just bought myself a bottle of witch hazel. The generic drug store stuff and whew the smell is a bit off setting. That being said, I will give it a try with my next shave and see if it is worth keeping around. If the smell gets to be too bad, I could just buy some of that Thayer's Witch Hazel that smells nicer. :3

Figured I'd send in my advice: I just got some Nivea For Men after shave balm.. "Repleneshing", not the "cooling" one, I'm not too much of a "menthol" fan (except for CarrieM's First Frost... That is an amazing cream... But I digress). I just gave it a try today and it did WONDERFULLY. Put a small dab (SMALL, I emphasize, like, as small a portion as you'd use of shaving cream, it goes a long way) put a splash of that on your face, and rub it in, no razor burn, no tight skin feeling... It works AMAZINGLY, and smells clean while the scent is there.. The scent is gone in 15 minutes though, so it won't clash with your cologne/AS... And it's CHEAP. 7 Bucks for a loooong lasting bottle.

Splash can be a noun:

Number 12 is the meaning we're all using it for, and it also says between numbers 9 and 10 that splash can be a noun.

You might hate that usage, but its in the dictionary! So its valid and we can use it..!

It will really depend on your personal skin chemistry. If you have mildly oily skin, you might want to avoid going too far in either direction (astringents vs. moisturizers).

Personally, I have found most traditional aftershaves to be too astringent. This causes my skin to be too dry in the short term, but too oily, later, as my face overcompensates with oil production. On the other hand, most balms and lotions are way to oily for my skin and my face feels greasy throughout the day. I also avoid moisturizers after shaving, as they tend to be greasy on me, as well.

So, I have found witch hazel to be a great toner with mild astringency that I can splash on my face after a shave. I never rinse it, but lightly pat it dry with a clean towel, afterward.

I have been doing this for over 20 years with great success. I am 39 years old and still sometimes get carded at bars! Okay, I know much of it is genetic, but I still have to credit good skin care, as well.
