Thread: razor burn treatment.

I'm paying dearly for using a bad DE blade. Should have stuck to my merkur. I've had razor burn the last few days and I wanted to know what balms are good for treating it. I've heard that skin food is good, but how about as a several day recovery treatment? Any other good recommendations? Anything good at rite aid or Walmart?

Toss the bad blade and try some Nivea ASB. It's available at any local drugstore or Walmart...That ought to work.

Does nivia help if applied everyday, even if you don't shave that day?

an alum block treatment would help,but it might burn a little bit but its a nice burn.

Serves me right for using Lord blades. Although I probably screwed up my angle or pressed to hard or something. Unless anybody else had had issues with this brand.

You can use Nivea everyday for your razor burn, even if you don't shave. Try not shaving for a couple of days, while applying the Nivea to your face each morning.

As for the Lord blade that gave you the razor burn...Every low cost DE blade may have an occasional defective blade in the package. You can always try another--along with decreasing the amount of pressure you are applying to the razor as you shave. Allow the weight of the razor, not any pressure you apply to it, to remove your beard.

Remember, the purpose of DE, just as with str8 razor, shaving is beard reduction, not a close smooth shave on the very first pass. That is why WTG, XTG and sometimes ATG passes are needed when using both types of razors to achieve a close shave.

Jhenry makes good points. Lay off the shave for a day or two. Nivea is not only a good aftershave balm, it also can be used as a daily facial cream, even if you don't shave.

If I may add suggestion: also don't forget to apply some witch hazel, particularly Thayers Super Medicated Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera. I use this stuff daily and love it. I also feels it has a continuously healing effect on my Hollywood face.

When shaving with a DE, the worst you can do is to use low quality blades, as well as go over the same spot excessively. Also no across the grain for now. Keep the strokes short.

I always use the musical 1-2 pattern when shaving with a DE. Say, starting with the right side burn, use one short stroke north to south on the closest area to your ear and then make the next stroke in the area next to it, and on toward your cheekbone. Flip the razor and repeat the the movements methodically in different areas of the right cheek as you head toward the jaw.

So my patterns comes to this: 1-2 flip, 1-2 rinse the razor. You'll need to vary that pattern in other parts of your face, but it might work for you. Obviously beard reduction is the whole idea with each new pass. In your case, for now, stay with WTG and XTG. Good luck.

Have you gotten a blade sampler pack ? When I first returned to DE shaving that was what I did. There were no decent DE blades available locally. In the sampler pack I found the Feather and the Gillette Swedes and got a large supply of each. When I was a kid shaving with Gillette DEs forty five years ago the Gillette blue blades were brutal. I'll never forget when they came out with the Gillette Super Stainless blades. They were more pricey but worth every penny. Get a supply of quality blades or just put the DE away and shave with a straight razor.

You just have to experiment with all the blade choices out there. What might work for me may be terrible for you. I love mercur and feather blades and get great shaves from them. As to the razor burn give it a rest a few days and I second the Thayers its the best for razor burn I know of but can be hard to source. Aloe applied to the skin will help too.
