    Default Pre-shave oil?

so, i hear someone saying that you shuld get propper Oiling to your face before shaving with a SR... and i was thinking.. does that mean that you should put some kind of oil on your face? or just the regular shaving soap(goos quality) shoud offer enough lubrication for this purpose?

    thanks!

Some people use commercially made pre shave oils, others use things like argon oil and Noxzema and others still just lather up and shave. The only way to find out if a pre shave of some sort will make your shave better is to try a few and see if it works for you. It really is a personal preference thing. I tried a few pre shave and found they did not do anything for my shave so I just lather up and shave. OTH you just might find a pre shave of some benefit to you.

Back when I used to do this, for a truly luxurious self indulgent shave I used pre shave oil but used sparingly.
The concoction I used was sometimes store bought and later made by myself and scented to my liking. In this fashion I would take a few drops rubbed gently on the face and stubble. Then I would do the hot towel treatment on my face at least two towels then wipe of the excess and go to lathering the face. I might even throw a hot towel over the lather for extra softening for the prep. Remove lather with towel and then final lather and shave. Sounds like a lot of crap to do right. Yeah it is but hey its a luxury shave right? Do you need to do it? Of course not. Does it feel good on maybe a Sunday morning when you just want to spoil yourself in every way possible? Damn right it does. So enjoy it if you want to.

I've tried it and didn't notice enough difference to continue with the extra effort. Also took a long time to get the oil out of my really nice brush.

If your gunking up your brush, you are doing it wrong. A couple drops here and there on the skin massaged thoroughly. The oil is just for a little added protection and to nourish the skin before the act of stripping your outer layer of face skin (mantle) with soap and a sharp instrument. Of course this is optional and not necessary for most but is an added protection for some that have sensitivity issues. I know most people are looking at time and cant be bothered but it can be a nice experience if done properly.

I've used few pre shaves. I have aos oil, proraso pre shave and I've used straight jojoba oil. I myself enjoy using them but I can't say I miss them if I dont. As Razorfaust said a dab will do never noticed my brush getting gunked up at all either. The only way to know if you like them or if they're worth it is to try. Happy shaving.

yeah.. i was thinking that if i used any oiling i would preffer to try natural oils or an oil mix made by myself.. maybe flaxseed, coconut, jojoba or that kind of things... but if i see that there is really no big difference.. i think i'll go and remoe... in fact, i don't hink i will buy any just test with what i have before going spending any $$ (flaxseed, coconut, olive)

thanks to you all for your commetns!

I've been using a homemade oil, 10% castor 90% grape seed with sandalwood essentials as both a preshave and a post shave. For the preshave could do without but does add a little to the protection and glide. But for postshave does wonders. Helps the smell of the captains choice sandalwood last longer and very good as a moisturizer.
