Washing before shaving removes oils from the hairs, which allows the lather to better soften them. I think a long hot shower is best, but a nice wash and hot towel is also very nice.

Well you could always wake up to refreshing hot towel treatment. I'm sure it would be quite refreshing

I think as long as you use a quality face wash you will be fine. I would just add a quick hot towel to your routine.

If you can get a bar of a good Pre shave soap Like O Melhor or Musgo Real that should help considerably. They work wonders on the facial hair if you aren't taking a shower right before you shave.

Sure a good face washing is fine....

You might try building the lather on your face.

I like to shave then shower myself. I just factor that into
a slightly different lathering strategy. I wet the brush once
and swipe the soap a turn or two. I then build a half way
lather on my face with an inexpensive eight dollar boar brush
    that almost scrubs my face.

I then rinse the brush pickup some fresh soap and work a
lather in a pewter shaving mug. When I have a working lather
I rinse my face clean of the first half ass lather and
continue building a more correct lather half in the cup and
half on my face. All in all the wash plus lathering takes
a couple of min. Time enough to wake up and long enough to
    soften the old whiskers.

In all this I have a warm mug of lather for the second braille pass as
a bonus. The pewter mug heats up nicely and adds to the process.
I guess a tin cup from the camping kit might do just as well.
I have my eye on a five buck "sierra cup" in titanium that may make
a great lathering cup... I think I will ask Mrs. Santa. The
shape of a sierra cup would make a good cup to lather in.

I too prefer to shave right after a hot shower. This has been the best result for me. I shower and shave the night before work, because I have to get up too darn early to be able to take my time and enjoy it.

If I don't take a shower with the shave, I just wash with hot water and a good soap, let the water sit for a minute (with a couple of more hot splashes), then apply pre-shave oil, lather and razor.

Yep, nothing beats a hot shower before you shave!

    Cool

Yeap...my standard routine, hot shower and shave. As of recently though, I have added the steamed towel treatment. That is, I wet a barber's towel and microwave it for a minute and a half. The combination of the two is great!.

Has anybody tried anything like this: Billy Jealousy // Male Grooming Products : Shave : Hot Towel : Pre-Shave Treatment

The lady at the store put some on my hand and it warmed up pretty quickly. I don't know if it opens up pores or just feels warm. Probably a con.
