Is it embarassing that at 36 I finally learn the proper technique for pre-shave preparation? I mean my dad left when I was 10 and my stepfather wasn't the kind of guy to want to teach me to shave so I had to go it on my own... and consequently did it wrong for 2 decades.

You're not alone. Nobody taught me anything about shaving. I picked up my Dad's Gillette Super Speed and had at it. Better late than never.

Ladies do it too. Shaved with nothing but a little soap for years. All that flowery Gilette shave foam crap costs a fortune and irritates my skin. I didn't know there was anything else!

Well from my other thread you know I made my own pre-shave oil. So first I wash my face with some straight no-nonsense soap (I use unflavoured/unscented lye-soap made by a friend of mine who is a Civil War Reenactor). Then Pre-Shave oil worked well into the face followed by a hot towel. After the towel a little more oil if neccessary and then lather up the brush and the face and go at it with the razor.

36 ain't nothin'! I didn't learn until I found this place at age 59. My step father didn't show me anything, just handed me a razor and said "Shave".

Yeah, it makes you cry when you realize how many years of crappy shaving you went through. Then you stumble on SRP, and voila - a great shave!

I got tired of disposables the first month I started shaving

4 months later I got my first straight.

I started DE shaving when I was 16 and straights when I was 17. Now I'm 18 and still getting a great shave. I really do feel bad for you guys though! At least now you can live the rest of your lives clean shavin' and ready to conquer the world!

My first shave was my worst. At the age of ten I picked up my grandfathers DE and "shaved". I put on no soap, and applied way too much pressure and wound up shaving off a half inch of cheek.People think I have a dimple. After my face healed my grandfather taught me to use a SR, and a DE correctly. If it wasn't for him I would probably have a very long beard right now
