The Bearded Newb
Through my searches on this topic all that I can find is guys with a weeks worth of stubble talking about no need to do a pre-shave "beard" trim. However I have more than a week or two's stubble:
So my question is, as a first timer, should cut that thing down a bit before attempting my first straight razor shave?
You could trim it if you want, but I say GO FOR IT!
You should take progress pics while you remove it or a video if you can manage it

I say, You don't need to trim that beard at all. Just get is all soft with shower, hot towel, lather, etc. Then shave that awful beard away.
I'm assuming with the full beard and all (and calling yourself a newb) you don't have any SR shaves under your belt? If not I'd strongly recommend trimming first. The first time out you'll likely get the angles wrong and probably be paranoid about blade sharpness; the blade will likely snag in all those whiskers and you'll assume the blade is dull, resulting in more pressure and strokes used. Result may be an unpleasant experience. I don't want to scare you off by any means, I just think you'll be better off the first time round mowing through less hair.
PS - My first SR shave was with three days growth, which was more than enough to make me believe my razor was less than sharp. But with much more experience I actually love shaving off a few days growth at a time. Makes for a smoother shave too.
