Thread: barber shop shave

currently i use a disposable blade straight razor on my customers but im getting sick of changing blades and getting defective ones. i change blades constantly and soak them in barbicide in between shaves. i am wondering, when using a REAL blade what is the best way to stay disinfected and totaly safe?

An Autoclave, though I guess you would need a razor with metal scales, something like a Dovo, all SS

Most health codes pretty much rule out using an actual straight. If you did probably the autoclave or maybe soaking in barbercide.

+1. Check your local laws first, just to be on the safe side. The banning of real straight razors is almost universal everywhere, making the use of shavettes the norm for Barbers. It may be your only choice.

As far as I recall, he's from Allentown, PA. Straight razor cuts are just fine in PA according to a quick google search. And a barber in PA does 240 hours of practice with a SR before getting his license...

You could do a straight if you have an adjustable-depth tray in your barbicide that allows you to lower in your blade, but not your scales. Might need to fashion some kind of holder.

How long does it take to graduate from barber school? That's a lot of hours to practice shaving!

Well, in University, I think a typical course was about 100 hours per semester. So that's probably 2 or three semesters. The hair cutting component in the document I read was over 530 hours, then 20-30 hours each of a few different areas.

Probably two years worth of courses all told, alot of which would be hands on / apprenticing I would imagine. But hopefully wyobarbershop comes back to answer for certain.

Hi. AIDS virus does not last 20 minutes outside the human body. The problem is that someone could use the same straight in two costumers with less than 10 minutes between them. So, it is forbiden almost everywhere. And AIDS is not the only virus and there are some harder ones to kill than AIDS (and also deadly). I dont see many 100% safe solutions to shave ouside our place, with your own blades and strops. Unless you take them with you to the barber shop.

According to my barber, straights can be used in far more states than we've been led to believe. Lazy barbers will tell you they're banned only because they don't want to be bothered maintaining them. Incidentally, he uses a disposable, so he has no axe to grind.
