Thread: Proraso Shave Soap

I'm a str8 razor newbie so be gentle! 😳

I've been using glycerin shaving soap in my mug with a silver tip brush for YEARS. Just for the hell of it I purchase a container of Proraso soap and, to my surprise, it's semi-soft. What is the proper method of lathering with this product?

I'm not sure that my way is "proper" but it works for me.

I use a scuttle of sorts, so here's how I do it.

I put a small amount of soap into the scuttle with maybe 10 drops of water. I soak my brush and then shake out the excess water (but not too vigorously). I then use the "pump & grind" method to build the lather. The brush goes in circles and up and down. After about 30 seconds of that I test the consistency of the lather and add water if required. The lather is almost ready at this point and I finish building it on my face with the brush.

I'm sure others here will chime in shortly with their methods and I'm not so sure there is a right or wrong way to do it. This is just what works for me.

I think you've got the soap in a plastic tub. It's a soft soap and is designed to load into the brush easily. Just be more aware of how much time you're loading the brush and keep track of any shaving sessions in which you had more lather left over than you're comfortable with.

just soak your brush shake the excess and spin it on the top of the soap until you have as much as you think you will need. Works great with hot or cold water.

Yeah, it's a funny thing, sort of a hybrid of a soap and a cream. Load the brush basically like indicated above by alb1981. I always shake my brush five times after soaking. I have learnt it's best to load the brush with soap (by squishing into the soap) and then take it to a bowl and very slowly mix with water; a few drops at a time until you have the right mix of soap and water.

Might get some more Proraso soap tomorrow, actually, now you mention it :-)

I soak the brush - small shake - load the tips - work a comfortable lather on my cheek and neck and then I use the brush to build the left over in a mug for the second pass. Works great for me.

+ 1 if you're a harsh hard soap user, you maybe could take it a little bit more easy with the Proraso, but you use it pretty much the same way you use any regular hard soap.

I load my brush for 30-ish seconds, then make my lather in my scuttle. Proraso is an awesome early morning soap, I love the cool feel.
